2011 | In June Diamond Aircraft, Siemens, Austro Engine and EADS presented the world’s first aircraft with a serial hybrid electric drive system at the Paris Air Show Le Bourget 2011: the DA36 E-Star. Also in June Austro Engine wins EU „Clean Sky“ Programme: Eurocopter, Austro Engine, Mecachrome and TEOS Powertrain Engineering set up cooperation to decrease future helicopter fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. In May the AE300 was certified for the following fuel types: like TS-1, RT, JP-8, Jet Fuel No.3, Jet-A1 and Jet-A and the first DA40 was successfully upgraded with AE300 engines. On March 2nd Austro Engine and STEYR MOTORS signed a cooperation agreement to develop a 280 hp 6 cylinder aircraft engine AE500. Since the beginning of the year the AE300 Turbo-Diesel engine from Austro Engine is certified for 100 % maximum continuous power by the EASA (European Aviation Safety Agency). |
2010 | On November 19th Diamond Aircraft Industries received ANAC certification in Brazil for its single engine aircraft DA40 NG. In November Dr. Gerd Berchtold joined the Diamond Group as part of an internal company reorganization to better position the company for the future. In October Diamond Aircraft and RIEGL Laser Measurement Systems are launching a turnkey survey aircraft which is completely new in this market. At the International Aerospace Exhibition (ILA) in Berlin in June a Diamond DA42 NG was the worldwide first aircraft flying with algae fuel in partnership with EADS and Austro Engine. In April Diamond Aircraft caused quite a stire internationally, after the eruption of the Icelandic volcano “Eyjafjallajökull”, as it‘s DA42 MPP uses a piston engine rather than a large-scale turbine jets, allowing it to travel unaffected through the ash, unlike large commercial jets. The plane collected data directly from the ash cloud with special air monitoring sensor equipment from Austrian company MLU to help accurately map the cloud that caused chaos to air travel across Europe. On April 13th Diamond Aircraft Industries received ANAC certification in Brazil for its twin engine aircraft DA42 NG and the multi-purpose platform aircraft DA42 MPP NG, both powered by Austro Engine AE300 turbo-diesel power plants. On the 9th of April Diamond Aircraft received FAA certification for its DA42 NG airplane, powered by twin 170hp Austro Engine AE300 turbo-diesel powerplants as well as EASA VFR/IFR certification for its DA40 NG, also powered by the AE300. On the 5th of March, Austro Engine received ANAC Type Certification for the turbo-diesel aircraft engine AE300 running on Jet A1. In January Diamond Airborne Sensing’s Nose Pod Configuration, designed for carrying very large sensors, as well as the in-house developed Noise & IR Reduction Kit that reduces noise and infrared waves to a significantly low level, received EASA type certification. |
2009 | In November Diamond Aircraft successfully completed the AE300 upgrade from Thielert engines for a DA42. On November 9th the first fully certified new generation of DA42 MPP – named GUARDIAN – went into operations at Diamond Airborne Sensing. Based on the DA42 MPP, Aurora Flight Sciences starts developing of Optionally Piloted Vehicle (OPV) which can be operated both manned and unmanned. In August the FAA issued Type Certificate E00081EN for Diamond Aircraft‘s proprietary Austro Engine AE300. The Dominator, the world‘s first UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) based on a manned aircraft, the DA42, with full civilian certification, is being developed by a drone manufacturer. On 22nd of June Diamond Aircraft received Japanese type certification for the Diamond DA42. On the 17th of June Diamond Aircraft Industries received EASA certification for the DA42 MPP New Generation (NG) powered by the new Austro Engine‘s AE300. On the 12th of March Diamond Aircraft received the much anticipated EASA type certificate for its DA42 NG, powered by the 170 hp Austro Engine AE300. In January Austro Engine and Diamond Aircraft Industries received EASA Type Certification for the turbo-diesel airplane engine AE300. |
2008 | In November the company received certification for the DA42 MPP in surveillance and laser scanning configuration for Russia. On the 26th of May the in-house developed „Universal Nose“ configuration for carrying state-of-the-art gimbal cameras on the DA42 MPP receivves EASA certification. On May 8th Diamond Aircraft‘s remote sensing platform DA2 MPP proved it‘s capability for prolonged missions to remote sites in a 13 hours non-stop operation. Another milestone for Diamond was the first flight with the new DA50 Magnum powered by the AE300 and flown by Christian Dries on April, 14th. A further highlight was the first flight with the HK36 Super Dimona with fuel cell power plant. For the first time in aviation history, Boeing has flown a manned airplane powered by hydrogen fuel cells. The first flight of the D-Jet S/N003 took place in April, in which several innovations have been tested. On March 17th, Diamond Aircraft´s Chinese production facility, Shandong Bin Ao received EASA production certificate for the DA40. Diamond is expanding its international presence and started with two distributors in South America by the beginning of this year. In January, Diamond Simulation GmbH & Co. KG was launching a new generation of flight simulators with numerous innovations. |
2007 | On the 14th of December Diamond Airborne Sensing obtained EASA TCDS-A513 for its laser scanning configuration. On November 13th, the first DA42 MPP was delivered from Diamond Airborne Sensing to the customer. The D-Jet has still been in development stage, S/N 002 had its first flight in September. On July 11th, the 170 hp Turbo Diesel Engine made its initial test flight in a DA40 Diamond Star. This new engine has been developed in collaboration with Austro Engine GmbH, Diamond Aircraft Industries, MB-technology GmbH and other distinguished partners. The DA42 Twin Star was awarded the Editor’s Choice from Flying magazine and was also named “Aircraft of the Year” for 2006 from Aviation Consumer as well as the “Best of the Best” from Robb Report. The maiden flight of the five-seater DA50 Superstar took place on the 4th of April. |
2006 | Diamond Airborne Sensing GmbH was founded as a 100 percent subsidiary of Diamond Aircraft Industries. The company supplies Multi-Purpose Platform (MPP) aircraft for use as multi-purpose sensor carriers and markets these worldwide. It offers MPP aircraft with complete systems including the sensor equipment in turn-key solutions. After several ground tests, Diamond‘s D-JET S/N 001 lifts off at 17:08 local time on April 18th, 2006 from London International Airport, Diamond Aircraft‘s North American facility. The opening of the Chinese joint venture, Shandong Bin Ao Aircraft Co., Ltd. takes place on December 8th, 2006. During the course of the opening ceremony an order for over 100 DA40 Diamond Stars is signed and handed over to Mr. Songlin, the director of the joint venture. The opening ceremony also marks the official start of production in China. |
2005 | During the beginning of October the inauguration of the production facility of the DA40 Diamond Stars takes place in Binzhou, China. French Premier Jacques Chirac visits the exhibition stand of Diamond Aircraft Industries on June 13, 2005 during the Paris air show at Le Bourget. Delivery of the DA42 Twin Star to customers starts at the end of March. |
2004 | On December 17, Diamond Aircraft Industries proudly announces its EASA IFR certification (Instrument Flight Rules) of the DA42 Twin Star. In December Beijing PanAm starts commercial flight training with all glass DA40 Diamond Stars in China. In autumn Diamond receives Chinese certification for its DA20 two-seater and DA40 four-seater. On July 23, 2004 Diamond‘s exciting new DA42 Twin Star arrives at the Canadian London Ontario factory on its way to Oshkosh, Wisconsin, for its North American debut at EAA AirVenture and crosses the Atlantic nonstop on its way back to Europe on August 16, marking the first non-stop Atlantic crossing of a diesel powered aircraft. This flight represents the first non-stop transatlantic crossing by a diesel engine powered aircraft in general aviation and underlines the efficiency and reliability of the DA42 Twin Star TDI. On May 13th, 2004 Diamond’s new twin, the DA42 Twin Star, receives its EASA (European Aviation Safety Agency) certification at the Berlin International Aerospace Exhibition (ILA 2004), only 2 ½ years after launch of the program and 18 months after its first flight. 2000 | Serial production and delivery of the four-seat DA 40-180 Diamond Star. The DA40-180 was the first general aviation aircraft (below 2.000 kg) which received international JAA certification (according to JAR 23) on October 24, 2000. One requirement was the certification of Diamond Aircraft as a DOA facility (Design Organization Approval) by the JAA, which was granted at the same time. |
1999 | Consequent product improvement showed in the introduction of the Katana DA20-100, a DV 20 Katana equipped with a 100 HP Rotax 912 S engine. The airfield Wiener Neustadt-Ost (LOAN) has been extended. LOAN has considerably improved the infrastructure, making it equal to a regional airport, e.g. new taxiways, installation of a runway lighting system according to ICAO standards and a published NDB instroment approach. Simultaneously the new Diamond Airport Service Center with the Diamond Business Center, the Pilot Shop, the aircraft museum, new round hangars and a restaurant, was opened. 1992 | In June 1992 the Canadian subsidiary of Diamond Aircraft Industries was founded, to develop, certify and manufacture a light, all-composite, two-seated aircraft, the DA20-A1 Katana, based on the already popular DV20 design, to serve the particular needs of the North American flight training market. To enhance the Katana's success as a primary trainer, Diamond has developed an integrated Private Pilot flight training system including training syllabus and materials, produced in association with ASA, a world-leading publisher of flight training materials. In the first year of production the Katana received the prestigious Flying Magazine Eagle Award for ‘Best Light Airplane’. |
1991 | The company was acquired by Diamond's present principal shareholders. Shortly following release of the HK36R, another project was undertaken by the company to develop a new flight training aircraft based on the motor glider.
